When the Engine Must Stop:
The Science of a Controlled Shutdown

Make a Controlled Stop of an Internal Combustion Engine

Shutting off the fuel flow is not always the answer!

Potentially present hydrocarbons in the atmosphere can be a problem when attempting to make a controlled stop of an internal combustion engine.

These hydrocarbons may enter the engine air intake system producing acceleration and loss of speed control of the engine, with the subsequent risk of explosion or deflagration.

Standard stopping methods eg. shutting of the fuel flow, may be quite useless, leaving the engine in an uncontrollable runaway situation.

The shut off valve allows the automatic closing of the engine’s air intake resulting in the shutdown of the engine and increasing safety in places such as offshore oil platforms, ship engine rooms and petrochemical refineries and plants.

Air Shut-Off Valves

For industries where combustible gas, vapours or dust can exist:

» Oil & Gas.
» Mining.
» Petrochemical.
» Marine.
» Power generation.
» Transport.

Conventional shutdown alternatives such as cutting off the engine's fuel to prevent overspeed, can be ineffective.
Only by installing shut off valves is it possible to ensure a fast and safe engine shut down.

Air shut-off valves for safe, quick stopping of combustion engines

These valves have been designed and developed to solve the common and repetitive problems caused due to engine vibration and low resistance to high temperatures.

Many years of experience and collaboration with engine manufacturers has resulted in the development of the most reliable and safe valves existing on the market:

» High resistance to vibration.
» Good resistance to high temperatures (after turbo installation).
» No high-pressure air leakage (up to 5 bar).

Manual, electric, pneumatic and hydraulic solenoid trip operating methods used.

Advantages

» Special guillotine-design (Swing Valve).
   Extremely fast closing process.
No impairment of the flow properties.
With the valve closed, no pressure is able to cause unexpected opening.
» Mountable on the pressure and the suction side.
» Suitable boost pressure maximum 5 bar.
» Extremely lightweight design.
» Very compact design.
» Easy installation and handling.
» Wide range of applications up to 13” (larger on request).
» Available for most types of internal combustion engine.
» On demand, available with corresponding engine intake manifolds.
» Operating temperature range -20°C to +230°C. (On request: -40°C up to +260°C)

Special versions (eg. ATEX) on request.
