BLOODHOUND SSC education and engagement – Inspiring the next generation

The BLOODHOUND SSC engineering adventure provides us with a once in a lifetime opportunity to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

To achieve this ambitious goal, the BLOODHOUND Education Programme will be made available to all pupils in primary and secondary schools, and to students in further and higher education.

Nearly 4,000 schools have registered in the first 18 months of the project, plus numerous presentations have been given to other groups and professional institutions, taking the project into the heart of the community and society.

Thrust SSC did a lot more than become the first car to exceed the speed of sound. It also smashed the previous record by a staggering 130 mph. Not only is this the biggest record margin ever, but even more amazingly, by exceeding the previous record by more than 20%, it also achieved the biggest percentage increase since land speed record breaking began. In aiming for 1000 mph the team are proposing to beat even this record by another 31%. More startling still – the official air speed record at low altitude (no longer competed for) is 994 mph. The team at Bloodhound SSC are even proposing to exceed that figure on land. Is this possible? This leads to the question: is there an absolute speed that cannot be exceeded? MORE »

The team are keen to have credible and capable challengers. Between Thrust 2 and Thrust SSC, Britain has held the Record for over a quarter of a century and there’s nothing quite like the promise of losing it – or actually losing it – to keep focus on getting the record back. This country has held the World Land Speed Record for longer than every other country put together, since the first record was set in 1898, and Bloodhound SCC are not going to let it go without a fight! A wonderful opportunity with BLOODHOUND:

An opportunity to create the ultimate Land Speed Record car.

When designed and built Thrust2 had the objective of achieving a peak speed of 650 mph, just beyond the existing record of 622.407 mph held by Gary Gabelich in Blue Flame.

Then came ThrustSSC, which raised the Thrust2 record by a whopping 130 mph – that’s 20%.

But BLOODHOUND is different - so different.

The target is 1,000mph - that’s a 31% jump and there is no way that the BLOODHOUND SSC is going to look like anything seen before.

First, the all-important powerplants. A jet and hybrid rocket has been chosen.
The reasoning is that the rocket is needed for its raw power and lack of draggy air intake, but the downside is that the rocket is an on/off device and with rocket power alone there would be real difficulty hitting and holding selected Mach numbers for the aerodynamicists to gain their data. And at these speeds the team has to tread very carefully, increasing the Mach numbers in small, careful steps.
